Press and hold 3 as your welcome message is displayed at first power on. The latest is 1.04 and is available on the RS website under the software downloads page. I just went through this process this morning. Save the file to your computer, and re-name it as a .zip file. Then, unzip and follow the instructions. You put the cable in and hold down PGM as you turn it on.

Wow, where is my head today? I totally got my models confused. The holding 3 only works for GRE made scanners I think. Perhaps someone else can explain how to check firmware on PRO 160 & 162

I'd like to know how to check the f/w version on a 162. I've been told that's it upgradeable by the folks at BUTEL, so the ability to check the version *should* be there somewhere.

If you mean upgradable for 800MHz rebanding, it's not applicable to the PRO-162 because the capability is already built in. You just need to go to Custom Band Plans and add two new ones. You can find the step by step procedure here:

Thanks but I didn't mean rebanding. If the 162 has, for example, v1.2 of its firmware loaded:

#1 how does one tell/see what the version is? Key combo on powerup, etc?

#2 how does one upgrade to a newer verion. Assuming there will be a new version.

I have sent a note to our friends at Butel. They are the ones who mentioned that the firmware on the 162 is upgradeable. I'll post their answer when received.

Got this from our friends at BuTel Software.

Press the 2-4-9 keys then turn on power to display current firmware version. In my case it was v1.36. Why this isn't in the Pro-162 manual is a mystery.

Follow up question: how does one know when a new firmware version is released?

Actually I don't think (or know that) a new version is needed. I was just curious as to how one knows when a new version is released.

Just keep checking the Radio Shack site.

Since the PRO-160 & 162 have been discontinued, there will NEVER be a new firmware rev.

What if I need to reload the original firmware should it become corrupt?
Is the original v1.36 available?
