It appears Radio Shack has totally abandoned support for the 160 & 162 scanners. Butel has reported a firmware problem, but it looks like there will not be an update forthcoming. Uniden recently changed factories from China to Vietnam and I think this might have something to do with this sudden change in the availability of these scanners.

Well, I wonder what the bug is? I tell ya, nothing surprises me any more.

The bug is when you upload the alpha tags from a LTR system, you have to re-enter the talkgroup IDs on the scanner itself to get them to work. Since it is obvious that there won't be a fix for this, I took mine back today and got a refund.

I've had mine too long or else I would have too. I don't think it's going to make much difference where I live since everything is pretty much all conventional VHF High Band. and it is a great, performer for my use. I feel for those though, who have a lot of trunking in their areas. It kind of makes me wonder about the other models they let go for half price so quickly. I guess time will tell.

How many firmware concerns can there really be with a scanner that is mostly made for conventional monitoring of analog VHF / UHF frequencies?

This scanner is a "nuts and bolts" scanner made to do an awesome job on those basic tasks, and it does just that. I find that it is a great unit, and isn't complex enough for firmware to matter a much in my view. It works great as-is.

How did you arrive at that conclusion? It works perfectly on trunked systems and it also works on rebanded systems.

I totally Agree!!!!!

Trunking is great on this scanner....and it wasn't made to be a conventional otherwise it wouldn't boast its' trunking capabilities. But, this is the internet and we all have a slant or opinion. I respect that.
More importantly, this is not really good news but very adaptable for me. Many LTR systems in my area are switching to a digital LTR standard and some other new technologies which cannot be monitored so I am reconfiguring the 162 to get the best I can out of this great rig. I still have LTR in my Uniden 396 and GRE 500 so it's not a total loss. Sure glad this isn't the ONLY scanner I own. I'd have a differing opinion. Too bad there is no support to fix this.
