A friend of mine bought a pro-163 for her dad in the hopes that it could monitor the local EDACS system in Johnston County, NC. Anyways, she didn't know how to program it and since I've had scanners all my life, I told her I would do it.

Anyways, I have programmed the EDACS system here and it's just not working. It seems to be getting the control channel and all that, and every once in a while, a talkgroup ID will show up but there is never any audio and it never stays locked on that TGID. I have programmed it with the correct LCN and all that, because I have multiple Unidens that monitor the system without issue.

I thought I was the man when it came to programming these things but I have to say the interface for this scanner is a horrible nightmare.

...and how do you choose which type of EDACS system? Narrow, wide or scat? There doesn't seem to be that option on this model

I assume Wide is the only type of system it can monitor, so if you are trying SCAT or Narrow you might be out of luck. I just got a new 163 for $108 last week and it monitors my EDACS just fine.

When you say you programmed it in the correct LCN order, you started with channel x01 (or the first LCN in the system) and not channel x00 correct?

Also, this radio is only capable of EDACS wide AFAIK.

Also, make sure you selected the ED mode for each freq you entered. Default is FM each time you enter a freq. so you need to press the MODE key until ED appears.

Thanks guys. My problem was with the fact that I started with channel 00 instead of 01. I finally found that in the piece of paper you call documentation. While I'm impressed with the receiver on this thing, I'm not impressed with anything else.

Thanks again for the help, it's working fine now.
