Just curious if any of you have been able to install the RS Pro-164 firmware upgrade 1.04. It's available on the RS website under product support tab for the Pro-164.
All I am able to do is download the 136kb executable file. There are zero instructions anywhere in the manual or the RS website. I would imagine that someone has successfully installed the upgrade, so I would like to know what I am missing.
Yes I do have the USB cable and know the correct com port and am successfully able to upload frequencies from RR, so the communication between my computer and Pro-164 unit is established and correct.

FYI, I have posted the question to the RS online help and received a response that they can't help me and to go into the RS store for expert assistance. I did, and no one there could solve the problem, so now I am turning to the real experts.. All of you at Radioreference.com.

Any guidance you can provide would be very useful.

Thanks!

I finally did get it to work.
Cowboy Kid, to answer your question, I used Port 10 for my unit, but yours may be different. I determined mine by doing the following:
1. Plug the USB cable into your computer and your pro-164 unit and make sure the unit is turned on.
2. On your computer, go to the "control panel" and double click the "System" icon. A system properties box will open.
3. Click on the "Hardware" tab at the top of that box
4. Click on the "Device Manager" button under the Hardware tab. A new box will open.
5. In that new box, scroll down to where it says "ports" and click on the plus sign to the left
6. That's where you find your port. Mine says "USB Serial Port (COM 10)". Yours may be Com 5, 11, or any other number that the computer assigns to it.
7. If you have multiple ports showing, just unplug the USB cable and the box will automatically refresh with one less entry under ports. Plug it back in, and it will refresh again, and your port will show.

Hope this helps.

Pro-164 V1.04 Update success

The PRO-164 V1.04 update from the RS website downloaded as 2000163_v104.exe with XP Home.
Double click it and a DOS window opens and closes quickly.
Re-name the file extension to 2000163_v104.zip and unzip it to get CPUUpdater_20-163_164_v1.04.exe
Double click the unzipped .exe to get the Updater software to run with instructions.
Follow the instructions *exactly*! Re-read them carefully!
The PRO-164 works only with the stereo plug on the RS 20-047 USB programming cable.
Do not use the mono adapter. See the PRO-164 manual PC/IF section. Pg22
Set COM port number correctly
Press PGM button while turning on unit.
Test and Update.
Success!

Anybody know what this upgrade addresses? I found no information on the RS or GRE websites.

Hey everyone, the firmware 1.06 came out a few days ago. This one has notes and is easier to download. No changing file extensions or anything. Read the Firmware PDF first.

What does firmware updates do?
Firmware updates became a necessity when the country started into its rebanding of Public Service frequencies. The frequencies were sent to a lower band and new frequencies were opened for use that split the difference between the frequencies the scanner was manufactured to look for. Those scanners that were able to receive firmware updates could make the adjustments where the others became less useful since they could not "hear" all the frequencies.

Firmware updates are also necessary from time to time to repair different difficulties that are inadvertently built into the scanner and don't come to light until the scanner is actually in the user's hands.
