Hi,

So I ordered via ebay a PRO 163 from a RR member. However, some total @#$%^ at work stole it while I was out ill.

So I went into a local thrift store on a whim and found a PRO 197 with no accessories (including no power cords) for $120.00. I'm thinking this is a pretty good deal, right?

I live in the SF Bay Area and need it for marine, DFG, EBRPD, CHP and Alameda Co. trunking. Will this be a good scanner for those frequencies? I've read it can overload in conventional mode.

Lastly, what model of power input does it use? Can I use the adapter from a PRO 433?

Any help is appreciated

You should be able to pickup a universal adapter at your local RadioShack for it. You just have to be sure the polarity on the plug is correct! The Pro-197 is GREAT! You got a deal, if it works properly!

That's a great deal provided it works properly as already stated.
Just for peace of mind, while the Radio Shack multi voltage adapters will work fine with the proper tip and polarity, be certain the one you get delivers 600ma in the 12 volt range.

The ones I have seem to fall below that amperage range when set to 12 volts, might be that newer ones don't.

Also the Pro-433 specs state a supply with at least 500ma, but the Pro-197 needs 600ma, both with a positive tip. I am not sure of the plug size. It is possible they are the same.

However, if the unit seems to work you might want to invest in GRE P/N: 100-011. It's only $25 before shipping and is the exact same thing for both Pro-197 and GRE-600 as an original stock power supply.

Anyhow, sorry to rant. I wish someone told me this before I went to the trouble of rigging another power supply to work. It wasn't that it failed; it's just that it would have been simpler, easier and even cheaper in the long run.

Im running one with Adaptaplug T and a RS 12V 500 mil supply with no problems. The supply remains cool as a cucumber even after hours of running.

Got It!

Well, I bought it and it works great. Downloaded WIN500 and figured everything out last night (not much for reading directions).

This is pretty freakin' cool!

Total cost:

Scanner -$120
Power adapter - $20
Software - $35

Total - $175

This is much more than I wanted to spend considering my 163 was stolen and that cost me $110. Luckily, the seller sent the software/PC/IF separately and that didn't get stolen. This is especially true when you consider that I need to buy new shirts and a dishwasher -- grrr!

Oh well, I realize I'm still ahead of the game and I shouldn't whine some much.

Thanks to all for their help!
