I'm thinking that the com port for it isn't set correctly. Pm me and I will give you my contact info and try to help over the phone.

Wirelessly posted (Moto Droid Bionic: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 4.0.4; en-us; DROID BIONIC Build/6.7.2-223_DBN_M4-23) AppleWebKit/534.30 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/534.30)

I can appreciate that you are frustrated but you do have everything to make the 197 work.

1. It isn't clear to me if the PC and the 197 are now "talking" to each other. If not, open the Control Panel's Device Manager and find the USB COM port number. Change the Win500 setting to the same number.

2. You may have to run Win500 in Administrator mode.

3. As your radio is 3 years old, you probably should upgrade the 197 firmware. Download the update from the RS support page. With the PC and 197 communicating, run the updater and follow the on-screen prompts. Also make sure you are using the latest Win500 version.

4. I assume you are a subscriber to RR. Open Win500, open the File menu and log onto RR.

5. Click your way through the choices for state and county. That will then give a choice of agencies. I would experiment with just one agency until you see how things work. (I spent 20 to 30 hours learning the program.)

6. Browse the forums here for Q&A. There have been many threads on both the 197 and Win500.

Let us know how it goes. HTH.

Looking at the database, the Chesapeake system has re-banded. You may need to put in custom band plans. The WIKI should have the info.

Good advice.

Your six items are great advice, but your assumption in # 4 is off. The OP does not have the Premium Subscriber icon, so we should suggest that he become one, allowing him to download from the RR DB.

Russell, user icons and locations don't show in the mobile RR WiForums app. That's why I got #4 above wrong. I just find it easier to pound around on the phone than drag the laptop out of the stack of stuff. :)

Couple of questions, I'm guessing it was 20-546 cable, and you may have pig tail on it. That isn't necessary to talk to the scanner. Don't know what OS you were using, can't help there. See that you have the Win500 utility, that is what I use for my 106 and 197. If you didn't/don't have a paid membership here, you will not be able to import frequencies into the software. You will need to do it manually, and it takes a bit of understanding of the scanner to do so.

Larry
