Hello all,
I purchased a new shinny Radio Shack Pro-197 radio. Nice rig by the well. However when listening to a couple of frequencys on VHF the radio has a motorboat sound in the back ground when listening to the conversation. However the noise goes and comes, the signal strength does not change. If I turn on the attenuator the sound goes away and I can still pick up the signals fine with no problems. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? It also only seems to affect VHF and only if it is a very strong signal. Maybe the receiver is being overloaded? Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,
Joey

Motorboating seems to be one of the characteristics of the Pro-197 (and GRE 600), although most of the time it appears on trucked systems. See my post here:

I haven't experience that on the PRO-197, or the PSR-600. I'm using small indoor antennas on these radios however, because they are very sensitive. In fact they totally eliminated some of the occasional motor-boating I was experiencing on a simulcast system on other digital scanners.

Characteristics.... I don't think so. Worst I've heard is on my uniden,
it's part of the "DNA" of the scanner.
If you want to listen to a scanner that has motorboating on a daily basis, buy a Uniden. Or do a search on here and Uniden + motorboating would win the prize hands down.

Now I have not heard one issue of motorboating on my Pro-106.
I do hear it often on my BCD396, when both are in the vehicle on stock antennas.
Don't let that discourage you.

What I think you are hearing is the sound of unshielded ignition wires. The sound will vary in speed, and appear to be moving up and down. It may start out slow and get faster, or be fast and slow down. That's usually ignition wires. It's more of a whine than a braap.
Can you describe the sound better or add more to the description?
