I am trying to get my new Pro-197 to receive all of the trunk traffic for my groups. I have access to a radio that is on the system, so I know when there is activity in a talk group. The thing is, sometimes the scanner stops on the talk group, but I get no audio, and the radio that is on the system is talking on that group. Why am I not getting audio?

It could be that traffic on that talkgroup is encrypted. Your system radio would get the audio since it has the hardware and key to properly decrypt the audio while your scanner doesn't (and mutes the audio so you don't hear that annoying digital noise). It's possible for some traffic on a talkgroup to be encrypted while other traffic is not. Your system radio can handle this just fine while your scanner will pass the audio when no encryption is used and mute it when the traffic is encrypted.

It also may be that the system has rebanded and your radio has been programed to work with the rabanded system while your scanner hasn't (specifically the custom trunking tables are not programmed/activated on that system). What would be happening in this situation is the system tells the radios (both your system radio & scanner) to move to channel xxx for that talkgroup's communication. Your system radio moves to that channel's rebanded translation (like 851.100 MHz) and works fine. Your scanner moves to that channel's old (pre-rebanding) translation (like 862.2375 MHz) and you get nothing (since the transmission is actually happening on a different frequency).

It just annoys me that I buy a unit that's supposed to cover the local trunking and then I have to buy a bunch of extra stuff to make it work. I am manually programming, but to the best of my knowledge, none of our main groups are encrypted. I am a professional firefighter and I needed something that my wife could use in the house when I'm on shift. She's a retired medic and likes to hear what I'm doing. We also help out the neighbors as first responders when we're home and can help.

Sounds like you may need someone who knows the trunking system you are monitoring. Perhaps if you post a query for help in the Texas forum someone close to you can help? Or will the local dealer program it for you? HTH.
