I've never got anything when turning squelch off with P25 frequencies that are active. They always seem to have a full s-meter. Just go into one of the search banks and turn the squelch doen to see that it is working.

The squelch knob should be set to the mid range position, fully counter clockwise opens it and therefore stops the radio from scanning if you intend to scan. Why so few frequencies? Mine is full 1800 plus objects.

Tune in an analog signal and set the squelch to that. I believe the scanner uses a different system all together for the trunked digital signals it is decoding so the squelch knob has no affect on those.

On the old Radio Shack scanners, they would reccomend turning the squelch all the way off on trunk tracking but that only worked with analog.

The squelch is only used on analog signals. The radio's audio amplifier is active all the time and is connected to the RF detector when the radio is used to receive analog signals. This means that on channels without a RF signal, the noise produced by the radio's IF amplifier is amplified and coupled to the speaker. The squelch is used to turn off the audio amplifier when that noise is present.

The audio is NOT connected to the detector when the radio is receiving a digital signal. The output of the detector in this case is a digital string of ones and zeros. This output is connected to a digital to analog converter circuit, sometimes called a vocoder. The output of the D to A circuit is connected to the audio amplifier. The D to A circuit doesn't have an output if there isn't a digital input so no squelch circuit is needed or used. So the setting of the squelch knob has no effect on digital signals.
