Is it possible to set the Pro-197 to scan for a specific fire tone out? If the scanner doesn't do it is there a software that will? Not sure if I'm asking a dumb question or not, I'm clueless.

No question is ever dumb. The pro 197 unfortunately does not have this feature. However a couple of the digital units from uniden has this feature your looking for.

They are talking about the pl codes. Such as ctcss and dcs and NAC

Ahh, I see, one again, thanks! Anyone know of any software that is capable of similar things? (when plugged into the scanner via my computer)

Any scanner can be utilized to measure the FTO, using the right software listed here: Fire Tone Out - The RadioReference Wiki This includes Uniden scanners that don't have FTO capability, RS or GRE scanners, AOR, ect.

Most of the Uniden DMA scanners (digital and analog) do fire tone-out.

Any scanner can be used for tone out monitoring, but it wouldn't be scanning, because to decode properly, the scanner must be manually set to one frequency. Some tones are sent with PL active, some without.

I would be setting the scanner on manual to the Main FD dispatch listening for fire tones but not medical calls.
