Hello all! This is my first post here so pardon me for asking a question that has already been covered. I live in Sumter County FL and want to monitor the new Sumter County Public Safety System (now listed here on RR). It only shows about eight talk groups, and I would like to scan the frequencies to see if any new talk groups appear (and capture them)?

Is this possible, and if so does anyone have instructions how to set the 197 up to do this. I am very new to this scanner and have not fiqured it out by myself yet.

Any help is appreciated!

Your main question answer is yes though.

Put in the available talk groups and then add a Wildcard. Every time a talk group is active then hit the STOR button and later on after you build up a few and find out what they are you can then edit the tag for each one. I suggest, if you haven't already done so, get the programming cable, they should have offered you the deal, and programming software. Many will say Win500, I use it, it's incredibly simple to use and you can store on your computer all your files. Make a folder for all those files and you'll have fun.

If you have already programed in the system then the best thing to do would be program be hand a new talk-group. Assign it to the system and do not enter a Talk-Group ID. It should be listed as "Wild Card", by doing this your scanner will stop on any talk-group not already programed into your scanner and it will show up with the talk-group ID/wildcard.

If you have the data saved on your computer you should be able to go in and go to truked system double click frequenies and add the new 8 you have and it should do the trick! if its not saved and you have the and you have the radio shack plug and have downloaded the software on your computer go to object browser hit scanner then download from scanner. Then load the new one in the trunk system and go back to the object browser and hit scanner again and hit upload to scanner. That should do it. but I would save it all to your computer. I use the date as the name of the file so I will know when I last did it or you can change everything if you travel and just go the the file and down load it. im not good at this and there may be easer ways but this works for me! There is so much this unit will do that i have no clue how to use1 i hope this helps.
I also have the winn500 and dont know what i would do without it! it is very easy.
