Anyone hear of a solution to having the 9 volt battery plugged into the 2006? I use it mainly to search for freqs , so the need for back up in the case of power failure not needed. Problem is unless you have a 9 volt in the radio you get a annoying beep

Any ideas would be helpful.

I found this related link. Note the side affect of doing this mod however, as it may be undesirable, maybe not.

It's very undesirable as the audio cuts out every second or two plus there is no longer a keypad beep.

I don't understand what's so bad about keeping a 9V battery in the radio as the manufacturer intended.

That said, if you really want to disable the low battery detector, first get the service manual for the PRO-2006 at www.mods.dk. On the linear board schematic at the lower right is the 9V battery and its low voltage detector. The detector is part of IC5 and pin 8 is the output. Lift one end of R231 or put a wire across R230 to disable the detector. These are both small surface mounted resistors so you will need the right tools to complete the job. As an alternative if it is easier to get to connector CN3, tie pin 11 to ground to disable the detector.

you mean putting in the 9 volt battery is a problem. I have both a 2004 and 2006 bought 20 years ago. every few years I change out the batteries. make sure it is plugged in when you take out the old battery and you will not lose memory.

Buy a 9v adapter and put a 9v battery clip on it or go to BIGLOTS for $4.99 with one on it. Yes, it won't stay powered in a failure, but you said that didn't matter.

I plugged my venerable Pro-2006 back in last night, after being disconnected for about a month. Constant low-battery indicator, regardless if changing the battery (3 times). I even used a variable power supply to verify it wasn't the connector, or any of my batteries. Did resets, etc.. would not go away. Appears the voltage checker is giving false positives.

Found your post via google, and followed the suggestion above, removed the 11 wire from the connector, and grounded it to one of the rf shields to the right w/solder. No more display, no more beeps, no audio cut-outs. Thanks!

Does this only disable the voltage checker, can I still use a battery....

You can still use a battery with the detector disabled. However, the detector may be alerting you to a problem elsewhere in the circuit. You should measure the voltages at pins 8, 9, and 10 of IC5 to see what is wrong. Maybe the battery voltage is not getting to the circuit where it is needed.

Low battery beep on PRO-2006

Here is my sequence:

1--PRO-2006 got hit by a rain shower when a protective tarp blew off my camp table.

2--Dried radio out for 24 hours. All systems okay, except...I began to get a false low battery indication/beep.

3--Here is the weird part. This is NOT continuous, but occasional without pattern.

4--My next step will be to open the box up and check for continuities/opens/shorts, etc. in the circuitry associated with the low battery detector.

5--One thought is that the "beep" is sent to the audio circuitry and could probably be attenuated to the point of being barely heard and thus less annoying, and a less-draconian solution than some others posed.

Resolution of PRO-2006 continuous low battery beep

After my earlier post as the beep problem devolved into a constant beep whenever the radio was on, I started working on solutions. First, I tried to eliminate the obvious.

--Was the battery producing 9vdc or more?
--Were the battery connector/wire intact?
--Had any of the connecting polarity diodes failed?

I used a digital volt meter to trace the 9vdc path nearly all the way to IC-5. In my case, no problem was found.

Next, I tried the Draconian: I reset the CPU. This wasn't really a big deal since it was time for major reprogramming. However, it did NOT solve the battery beep problem.

I then rechecked this site and found the suggestion to ground out PIN 11 on connector CN3.

This seems to have solved the problem. I now have no LOW BATTERY blink display and no beep. I still have keypad beep.

What I did was to sever the PINK wire coming off PIN 11. I then soldered a jumper wire to GROUND using the nearest metal case as a ground point. The two severed ends were stripped about 1/8th of an inch and both soldered to the ground jumper. This was all.

Please note that BOTH ends of the severed pink wire need to be grounded.

I have three images showing the process that I will make available if anyone is interested. (These photos also show a previous discriminator tap that I put in for data reception.)

Well, I don't know if Ronaldangle is still around, but more than four years have elapsed and this thread just became very useful to me. I have a 2006 with all of the above symptoms, tried replacing the battery and so forth, still the low battery beep and warning.

It took me about five minutes to do this mod/fix and it works perfectly.

Thanks Ronald wherever you are!

Glad to be able to help. For what it's worth, that PRO-2006 is still humming right along. Since 1991, it has been in regular service as my primary desktop scanner. The keypad gets a little resistant with extreme heat or cold but otherwise performance is still outstanding.

LMAO, I am in the same boat. About to try your fix to get rid of the annoying flashing battery icon and the 'non beep' you can hear since I killed that keyboard beep 20 years ago!

I just replaced the IC, i guess this "fix" is ok,but replacing the IC cured it and allowed the scanner to work as normal and the detector circuit works so i know when the battery is getting low. Yes, i resurrected a fairly dead thread but everyone else has so figured i would as well :)

Still beeping after all these years...

Funny to see this thread, going back to 2006. I have a Pro-2006 in the basement, that was "rained upon" by a dishwasher upstairs in the kitchen. Similar to rondangle's camping situation!

Same symptoms as the rest. Same attempts to fix (check battery contacts, reset scanner) yielded no joy.

So... in anticipation of a soldering iron session, I'm wondering where anderd found IC5 (PC324C, looks like an NEC part). Any suggestions for sourcing this part?

I used what i had on hand at the time, a LM224, but a LM324 would work as well, cheap and readily available. Sorry i never seen the post otherwise id have responded ages back. Sorry!

Ha! Better late than never!

Thank you sir! Looks like I get to melt some solder this weekend :) Wish me luck!
