hi there, i just purchased this scanner it performs great! my question though is, when it's turned on scanning, or in manual there is a slight hiss through the speaker which i've heard on other scanners but, there seems to be random static or crackling noises is this normal for this particular scanner? or do i maybe have a cap going bad, leaky? maybe common problem with these units? thanks for any help crippledchicken

abnormal

Static/crackling on a muted pro-2006 is abnormal in my experience with a few of these units. A little hiss, I've exeperienced, and I think some of them have audible power supply hum.

This could be comming from toooo much antenna if you are in a metro area. I have a 2004/5/and a 6. I once tried a PAIR of Channel Master 5094-A's. and the hiss was so high I had to disconnect one of the ants.

I have one that does the same its called squelch hysteris... i hope i spelled that right.
A lot of older scanners are louder than the new ones as far as the squelch noise.
But i keep on listening to the 2006 its a great scanner.
Plus after being on plugged in to AC for over 10 years im starting to hear AC hum
from the transformer .but hooked it up to a DCpower supply and that cured that.
And another problem they get is dirty volume pots but a little cleaner will clean that up.

Thanks Guys

hi, and thanks for the replys. sorry it took me so long to reply back but, my pc broke down right after i posted but, i've got another one going now. i run mine off of a home made 12 volt regulated power supply with verry low ripple. it seems the little random static has gone away. it was in storage when i bought it and i don't know for how long so, it may have just needed to run for awhile but, then again i moved the scanner to a different position on the desk and that seems to be when the light crackling noise stopped. it may have been the power strip that it was pretty close to or, the shelf i moved it out from under any way, now all i have the normal light hiss i've heard from alot of scanners close up. i've done the audio mod and it sounds great now through my external speaker running off the RS Discone. thanks again for the replys, crippledchicken

hi there, no i haven't ran it to the rear or anything. i'm kind of thinking it may have been the volume control causing the noise or, the dc power jack i'm using maybe was a little corodded as i never use the built in supply because of the heat issues. i'll spray the controls with some deoxit just to be safe. i've lined the inside of the plastic case with aluninum to help against interference so far, i've been very happy with it. Reguards, crippledchicken
