The scanner works fine for about 15-30 min then it just turns off, except for the backlight that stays on. If you unplug it and let it sit for a while it will work for another 15 or so minutes. Any ideas?

No specific ideas. It's a typical component failure symptom that a part will fail when it gets warm. That's why repair techs have heat guns and cold spray at the bench - to find the problem component quickly.

It's not likely to be anything you can do as a user unless you have some really wierd power supply issue going on. A swap of power supply (it uses a wall-wart?) could prove or disprove that.
