Pro-2040 First Time user

Someone just gave me a Pro-2040 today. I have the channels programmed in that i want to listen to, but i cannot hear anything. And with the Squelch I'm not sure if I'm supposed to leave it on where it makes noise or turn it past the point where there is no noise. besides that if anyone could give me a few pointers on maybe what else i should know about the scanner.

Adjust the SQ to the point the speaker is quiet. Test receiver with the local NWS frequency

Being that you don't state where you are, it is hard for us to help you make sure that the frequencies are correct for the 2040
