I am new to scanning, is this a good choice for a first time person? I thought about the 2052, but not sure the difference in double or triple truncking

You seem to have made a good choice since the difference between double and triple-trunking is the number of systems it can pick up.

Double picks up only EDACS and Motorola radio systems.

Triple, picks up EDACS, Motorola, and LTR business radio systems.

Hope This Helps, :)

Try the pro-97 for hand held or pro-2055 base. I have a pro-2051, not a easy scanner to work with for a starter scanner. Plus you can get better software for the 97 or 2055. The 2051 only has one person that makes the software and it is not the greatest.

I agree. The Pro-97 and Pro-2055 are far superior to the 2051. I sold my 2051 to get the Pro-97 and have never regretted it.

Both the 97 and the 2055 are awsome scanners. I have both.

The 2051 is an okay scanner. It lacks the ATT feature it despartely needs and not having text to keep up with the 1000 channels + talk groups is a real pain. Plus it is confusing to program.

I can understand that. Watch the for sale forums here as well as ebay and you can get a good deal on one. Too bad you missed the sale a few weeks ago. Both the 97 and 2055 were on for $149.99

I own both the PRO2051 and the PRO97, both are useful. The 2051 is a fine scanner for the beginner in my opinion, it's not too difficult to figure out the programming, just takes a little practice. The downside is that it lacks alpha tagging, you better have a good memory if you plan to use all 1000 channels, not including the trunk id's. For the PRO97 you almost have to use software to program it, and shouldn't a beginner to the hobby familiarise himself to the manual operations of a scanner first?

My bottom line: The PRO2051 is a fine scanner, pretty darn good for the money. It's not the best by any means but it will do what you need it to do. If you can hold out for the PRO2055 to come on sale again I would go that route. I can't comment on the PRO2052, I don't own one.

Welcome to the hobby!

The Pro-2052 is a good scanner. Has great sensitivity. It suffers from the same thing as the 2051 does though, lack of Attenuator. It suffers from overload from nearby signals really bad.

The Pro2052 does have one thing going for it that I like. 20 banks! This lets you divide up your programming so you can turn on and off agencies or areas as you like.

If I had to choose between the 2051 and 2052, I'd go with the 2052.

Just my opinion though. It can be computer programmed/controlled using a standard DB9M to DB9F Serial Cable. Several Programs out there for it.

The 2051 can't be computer controlled. Neither will be supported by rebanding.

I bought mine on Christmas Day 2005 for a little over $90.00. I thought I got a steal! I have since sold it but that would be my choice between those 2 scanners.

The 2052's audio is better. I have a review on it on my site: http://www.scanningarkansas.com/Pro2052/

Check out radio shacks store locater on their website ... see if any stores in your area are closing. Supposedly they have REALLY good deals on scanners. They are going fast from what I hear so you may want to call first to check on availability.

My opinion , go with the 2055....alpha tags are AWESOME...a "must have" for me!

Good Luck!
