Alright, here's the scoop.

I have the money to spend, 140 bucks at Radio Shack right now for the Pro 2052-2000, this would be a "new" scanner for me. My old Regency Monitoradio is dying (down to 1 speaker that's crackly), and need a good replacement.

Go for it or not? Any suggestions?

Unless you want a base type scanner, I would go for the PRO-95 for $9.95 more. Having alpha tagging is a really nice feature to have in a trunked scanner. I have 2 2052's and they work good, but are about 6 year old technology. IMHO

I'm looking for a "base" type unit, and wasn't too concerned with the alpha tagging / trunking. I was more-so looking for a good base unit that I can connect to my home PC. I didn't think many of the "mobiles" could do that.

At a thousand channels, that scanner ought to be able to hold every frequency in Vermont. If you have interest, the 2052 is great for MilAir and there should be a refueling track in the area which you can monitor. Maybe some ANG freqs also.

Choose your software carefully, some available is marginally useful. If you have questions on software, fire me a PM, I own a few and can provide some analysis.

Added through Edit: Buy the RS238 through male to female cable also, I think it's Radio Shack #26-117.

Yeah, I'm not sure I need 1000 channels, but I'm pretty sure alot of them are going to be used.

For dispatch, we only have 1 major frequency in this area, but all the departments have firegrounds, and then other frequencies. So that'll fill up 25-30 I'd estimate. Local PDs, State PD, Sheriffs, that'll fill up another 15.

Railroad frequently operates near me, have even done some "ride alongs" with them to the Bombardier facility. Definately going to have to put those in.

I definately plan on listening to ANG + ANG Fire-rescue. Gotta love The Green Mountain Boys. Have gotten to run a few airport emergencies with the, always neat to see the HRTs (Yes, HUGE red truck, they don't have BRTs) creep outta the bays and chase a plane down the runway.

they must have upgraded the radio systems here in VT, because I am now hearing down as far as Hartford, which seems a little odd. Hartford is the better part of 55-60 miles from here, and i've never heard anyone down there before, especially on 154.19. Can't wait till it's up and running. 8)
