Pro-2052 Newbie help

Hey... I'm a totally newbie to scanning. I picked up my first scanner today for 50 bucks, its a RadioShack Pro-2052.

I followed the instructions to program in my counties trunked system. When I hit search, I see the number for the talkgroup pop up (26800, Sheriff Dispatch North, since i'm in the North part of the county.) But unfortunately, all I hear is a strange grinding sound whenever it shows anyone on a certain talkgroup is talking. It just sounds like loud machinery or static.

What could be causing this problem???

Sounds like you maybe listening to a digital (APCO25) system, if so your 2052 does not do digital.

I also have this scanner. If I install a discriminator tap on this unit, will I be able to receive digital? I'm really not clear about this tap business. What is done with the discriminated audio signal from the tap? In other words how is it used?
