Pro-2096 issues!

My Pro-2096, which probably has less than 10 hours of use, seems to have broken on me tonight. I was using the scanner, scanning though a custom V-Folder, and all was well. I turned the scanner off for a couple of hours, and when I returned, I turned it on, and now the scanner will not receive ANYTHING.

I had banks 1-5 & 9 enabled, but the scanning "cursor" would not leave bank one. So I do the ol' standby scanner test, and hit the WX button to hear the harmony of the electronic weatherman, but it will not RX the WX either! Each time I hit the WX button, it will simply go to the next WX freq, but will still not pick up anything.

After fooling around with that for some time, I went to the stock VA-MD-DC V-folder, and this folder does the same thing to me. It will not do anything but sit there with the cursor flashing in Bank 1.

I have used both the included telescoping antenna, and my Diamond D-130J discone, with no change. I also did a full reset on the scanner using the reset button, and I still get the same results: the scanner acts like there isn't an antenna attached.

I am at wit's end with this. Does anyone have any other suggestions, or will my 2096 be making a trip to Fort Worth for repair?

If the cursor won't move off bank one, and you're sure you done a total, cold reset, and still see the same behavior, it seems likely that you've had some kind of hardware failure. I can't think of any kind of user error that could cause your symptoms.

Sounds like it went tits up to me. I wonder if it got "nexteled"? Did you have a nextel phone near the scanner?

Yea, sounds like most people (including me) have come to the conclusion that there was a failure within the radio.

As for the "nexteled" issue, I have seen you make reference to this before. Is there any documented proof that the nextel phones are frying electronic equipment? I'd be interested in seeing that, if so. Regardless, I live in an area where Nextel coverage is often non-existant, so I am pretty sure that's not what occured.

There is no proof that nextels are frying people's scanners!

This comes probably from someone that has had a bad experience with nextel and just plainly hate them. I on the other hand have had nextel for the last 7 years, there have been a few tense moments, but everything works itself out, nextel is by no means perfect, but for what they have they are great!

but again, nextels do no fry peoples scanners, if that were true everyone of mine would have bitten the dust. It just simply is not true!

NEXTEL has its pros and cons just like all the other cell companies

Once nextel moves its band more people might like them now almost all cell companies have ptt feature so it will just be a regular feature on the phones in the future

The whole, "NEXTEL fried your radio" thing just kills me. NEXTEL uses way less than 3 watts on 800 MHz. I've used 35 watts on 800 MHz right beside scanners with the antennas about a foot apart. Never had an issue.

I've also used 60 watts on VHF and 40-50 on UHF with the same antenna spacing, again with no problems.

If people are having problems with "fried" scanners, then I'd suspect a voltage surge / reverse polarity over RF overload.
