Pro-2096 Programming HELP!

I'm new to the 2096. My first attempt at programming the 2096 was to use Win96 to program my 2096 for Public Service/Safety trunked channels for my geographic area. Everything seems to have gone ok.

Here's a question:

Given: In all cases there is an Alpha Tag programmed into the channel information as well as the group data. For example, "Primary 17" is associated with frequency 860.76250. In the group data, ID 36208 is tagged BFD TAC-2.

Problem: Many times when a frequency is locked into, the correct Alpha Tag shows up on the display in the 4th line. In other cases. I get something like "MOT: 08016" rather than the tag associated with that ID.

I hope this makes sense.

Is there any way to have the 2096 always show the Alpha Tag associated with the group ID? I've pressed the "Text" button when this happens and the 2096 beeps but doesn't change the group ID to the proper Alpha Tag.

Sounds like maybe you have several TG's loaded with text ID's which show up when recieved with their text ID, but if you are scanning in "open" mode additional TG's that you don't have text ID's for will show up as the MOT: 12345 TG number. By swithching over to "closed" mode scanning you will only hear (and see) the TG's you select.

I went back into Win96 and closed each bank. Yes, that works. Every time there's a frequency hit, there is a corresponding Alpha Tag.

What you were seeing, the MOT: 08016, was a talk group you don't have programmed. In closed mode you'll only hear the talk groups you have programmed and not locked out. In open mode you'll hear all talkgroups except those you have programmed and locked out.

Basically, closed is for listening to only certain talk groups, open is for finding new ones.
