The volume pot is far to sensitive at the begining of rotation, any way to replace it with one so you get a smoother, slower volume increase?

I've thought about adding a resistor so it won't go down all the way.

I thought about that last night, a resister on the speaker wire to reduce the volume overall. This thing gets far louder than I'll ever need it in my living room.

Actually, I was talking about a resistor to not allow it to go all the way to no volume. Many times it's a difficult balancing act to set it low enough to hear at night but not go all the way down. Adding the resistor would give it a minimum volume so I could just turn it all the way down. It would also likely stabilize the setting a little more when adjusting it near the bottom.
