So....

Why would one buy the 2096 over the 96 (other than the obvious handheld thing...)??

Are there any notable differences in features/specs between the two?

The 2096 has very loud, bold audio. Probably some firmware bug fixes too. Everything else is basically the same.

As mentioned, the louder audio on the 2096. The backlight is not timed - it is bright, dim, or off. Other than the obvious differences, that's about it. I don't think there are any bug fixes in the 2096 over the 96, although the numbering is different for the CPU versions.

The combined volume/squelch knob is a pain on the 2096 compared to the separate knobs on the 96. I always have to be careful when turing it on or off so I'm not accidentally adjusting the squelch at the same time. It would be so much easier if there was just a power button so you didn't have to fool with the volume and squelch every time you used the radio.

You can keep the backlight on all the time on the Pro-96 by just pressing and holding the backlight button until it beeps. Unfortunately, you have to do it every time you turn it on :(

Right, but the point was that it's not timed on the 2096 - it's not even an option. It's either full, dim, or off. Likewise, the PRO-96 has no dim setting.

Agreed, and obviously the Pro-96 is set up that way to conserve batteries. It would've been nice, however, if RS had incorporated an option to have the backlight constantly on (and even with stepped levels) for users who use them with an external power supply (AC or DC).
I use mine in my van with a power adapter, and I sure would like to not have to turn the back light on all the time!
