They are a clearance item right now and getting one that is not a return or damaged item is slim. Just look in this forum I already posted my experience purchasing this radio. I ended up just spending the extra $$ and purchased the Pro 197. IMO

I have a pro-2096 that I have had very good luck with. Granted it doesn't have the features of my pro-197 but it is still a great scanner. The audio quality is good and the receive puts the BCD996T to shame.

I posted this in another thread BUT. I was in our local store 01/10/2009 and they had one and I told the manager about the display issue we looked at the date code on his new one 04A05 built April 2005 bought Oct 2005 still on the shelf the ones that are the problem scanners are ##A08 from what I see you can not buy one on line now it says IN STORE ONLY look at the date code and make up your mind. My pro-96 08A03 my pro-2096 12A04 and still in use and not for sale working next to my pro-163 and my pro-197. Just be your the judge armed with all the information and make your purchase.

I just acquired a Pro-2096 on clearance since it would be a nice addition at 299.99. I got it home and the power knob is inoperative (will not shut off or turn on and no click for power on/off) so it will be going back either later today or Wednesday since I have an appointment. Date code was 05A05.

If you can get a good one, they're decent radios. Seems like everyone these days is getting repackaged return units instead of new ones. I got mine brand new in December, and it's been great so far. I'd definitely agree with the advice that if you do decide to get one, inspect it first. If your area stores don't have one, ask them if they'll bring it in for you so that you can look at it before you buy it.

As for the Pro-197, it's even better than the 2096. If you can swing it, just spend the extra $$ and get the 197. I've now got a total of 4 of them, 2 at my desk, and 2 in mobile use, and you can't beat 'em! The digital decoding on them is excellent, the audio is good, but they are a bit confusing at first, I will admit.

Hope this helps!

You say it does not work. That does not tell anybody anything

1. Does that mean it does not hear anything?
2. Does it hear the anolog non trunked traffic?
3. Does it hear some trunking traffic?
4. Most of the talk groups that you are trying to listen to are E (encripted) and no scanner can pick up encripted traffic. Are you hearing sounds but no one talking thats encription.
5. Does the man at radio shack know anything about scanners or is he a salesman?
6. YOU SHOULD BUY THE SOFTWARE AND CABLE AND LEARN TO PROGRAM THE SCANNER YOURSELF AND THAT WAY YOU KNOW IT IS DONE CORRECT.
7. In the RR DATABASE A=Analog any scanner can hear.
8. In the RR DATABASE D=Didital meaning it will take a Pro-96 , Pro-2096 , Pro-106 , Pro-197 or other digital scanner to hear traffic.
9. In the RR DATABASE E=Encripted NO SCANNER CAN HEAR THIS.
