DID ANYONE READ THE NEW ISSUE OF MONITORING TIMES. IT SEEMS THAT OUR TRUSTY 2096 WILL NOT CABABLE OF RECEIVING THE NEW 700mHz PUBLIC SAFETY BAND. WE HAVE A WHILE YET 2009 OR 2010. ITS A SHAME SUCH A GREAT SCANNER WILL BE AS MUCH USE AS A 99 DOLLAR ONE. IF I AM WRONG PLEASE LET ME KNOW. BUT FIRST CHECK OUT MONITORING TIMES. CHUCK,N4UED

That is sort of correct. The 2096 (as well as the Pro96 handheld) can receive just fine in the 700 MHz. band after a quick software mod.

It will not however track trunked systems in the 700 MHz. band. You can listen to them in conventional (non-trunked) mode.

The currently available Uniden BCD396T and BCD996T scanners are fully capable of receiving and tracking trunked communications on 700 MHz. The upcoming GRE scanners will also be able to handle 700 MHz. as well.

Chuck, this is old news and those I am not sure what you mean by 2009 or later, how about the 700 MHz trunking sites/systems that have been in place for a couple of years now?

Please turn off your CapsLock when on this site.

A valid question, and a valid answer:

Not every area has 700 MHz. operations active these days. I think Illinois was the first, starting about 3 years ago with StarCom21 sites in the Peoria area. There are a few others now too. For this reason many people don't know about this new band and when they hear about it for the first time they are curious.

Don't worry about some posts seeming grumpy, it is hard to properly express emotions in non-real time text, and it sometimes comes out well, grumpy. The content of the post is correct though, it has been discussed at great lengths in various forums here at Radio Reference and other places but not everyone searches all the deep dark corners of the forums before posing questions.

I've noted a 700MHz control freq here in Austin TX and put it in the APCO 25 control choices on the Pro96. Alas, always static so I blocked it but left it in folders. Is this static the result of the 96 not tracking the freq or some other thing I, in my ignorance, am not aware of?
Hopefully they will come up with a software or firmware fix...

The 96 does so well on the 866MHz control freqs I just can't imagine that I couldn't trunk 700 range. (Of course I see all kinds of stuff I couldn't imagine nearly every day. Ain't the 21st Century a trip?)

Best,
Jon

The Pro96 and 2096 should display the System and Tower ID on a APCO25 control data signal on 700 MHz., so if you are able to display that info then it is obviously a control signal. If not then it might be a birdy. Weak control signals and birdies sound pretty much alike, so make sure the channel is in the "Manual" condition and the Mode is set to "MO".

Jon, they can't trunk in the 700 MHz range because the frequencies fail an internal firmware test of a valid frequency. There is no fix and no way around it. Once the additional range is opened up via software, the Pro-96/2096 can be used to decode P25 systems (using Pro96Com) in the 700 MHz range and they can monitor conventionally, but they cannot trunk track there.

OH WELL.... if I get a couple years out of my $280 (used) Pro-96 that's cool... I'll resell it to someone who doesn't have to deal with 700Mhz and get the latest and greatest!
