Is it possible or safe to run an RS Pro-34 scanner using newer Ni MH batteries in this unit instead of the older Ni-Cad batteries that were the main researchable used back 40 years ago?
you can use them in there.
but i always use an external charger to charge all of my rechargables.
i use a maha c-9000 to do that, as it is a smart one and stops charging when the cell is full.
a Ni-Cad or Ni-Mh are 1.2 volts and the radio can use alkaline at 1.5 so voltage is not a problem.

Plenty still on analog many our local malls security still runs analog and there repeaters carry the signal pretty far. Guess if analog is working many businesses don't really want to spend funds upgrading to a digital mode.
Also aircraft and this model doesn't cover mil air.
The PRO-34 was my first 800 handheld scanner. It was used kind of hard back in the day when didn't have too many scanners. Sure you had to hit the scan button many times to follow a conversation with Trunked Tracking scanners being many years in future when this scanner came out.
