I bought a cable off Ebay that is USB and has 6 different attachments for various scanner/radio types. Two of them are 3.5 audio type jacks, but one has 3 rings while the other has 2 (stereo). The cable itself was recognized by Windows 7 based on a Prolific USB-serial driver that was already installed to support an IOGEAR USB-Serial adapter. Is that the only reason drivers are needed is just for the cable itself? I see driver references for the PRO-444 scanner, but the system doesn't seem to need drivers for the scanner. So, I assume the PRO444.exe software (free download from the Radio Shack website originally) knows how to talk to the scanner over the USB-serial connection. Am I missing something? Not sure that the cable I bought is actually consistent with the 20-546 cable that was supposed to support the PRO-444 but also not sure if it is not. Need to get a programming cable solution working since ALPHA-TAG (display name) entry through scanner is way more tedious than I want to do for a large amount of entry.

Any suggestions? If I buy a cable on Ebay that claims to be 20-546 compatible, can I be certain it will work? Do I need alternate drivers specific for the PRO-444 scanner or the cable or if the system already has a driver that recognizes the cable and sets it up as a COM# port, should I be good to go?
