What is the approxiate range of a typical handheld scanner? I took my old Pro-50 (doesnt even do trunking) to work today and I was picking up my city PD at least 10 miles away and also another PD thats another couple miles further.
I was really surprised. A few of the transmissions were scratchy but I could still hear them.

The "range" of a scanner depends on many factors; the output power of the transmitting station, their antenna type and height above the ground, your height above ground, your antenna type, the frequency or band being used, any obstructions between you and the transmitting station, atmospheric conditions, and other things. 10 to 12 miles is a typical range, but depending on the things mentioned, it could be a lot more, or a lot less.
