PRO-51 - Programming Problems w/ FDNY

Hello...

Forgive me if I'm making any mistakes, first post here. I wasn't sure if this belonged in the New York forum or this one.

I am going to be in Manhattan Thursday, and I figured that I would program some FDNY frequencies in my scanner and just listen to them in the car, see what's going on, if I'm near anything, etc.

So I tried to add the frequencies in, and when I click the "E" (enter) button to save the frequency, it will switch out what I originally typed in, 482.1062, to 482.10000.

Here's a more simple way of explaining it.

What I want to enter: 482.10625 (Manhattan FDNY Dispatch)

What the scanner allows me to enter: 482.1062

What the scanner shows me after I press the "E" (enter) key: 482.1000

I don't understand why it does this, and I'm curious as to how I can solve the problem and enter my desired frequency. Is there some problem or deficiency that the scanner has that prevents me from doing so?

That is a very old scanner that simply is not capable of working on 6.25 kHz frequency steps. It can only accept frequency intervals of 12.5 kHz.

You may get some distorted reception with it programmed for 482.100 but that is the best it can do.

Ahhh shoot. That sucks... Would you know if a Bearcat BC355N could do the job?

I was getting some sort of reception from 482.100 in Connecticut, but I tried looking up the frequency and couldn't figure out what it was...

Like k2hz said, the scanner is too old to accept the correct frequency step.

Program the VHF frequencies instead.

Too late to do you any good today, but for the future t(he VHF frequencies seem to be gone from the database already) try 154.43 - Citywide. Manhattan is 154.25. They're both 186.2 PL if you have that capability.

The VHF frequencies have not been removed from the database, they are right underneath the UHF frequencies.

Uniden BC-355N & F.D.N.Y. UHF Frequencies

Hi-The Uniden BC-355N is narrow band compliant and will take the New F.D.N.Y. UHF frequencies with no problem. "N" means narrow banding and replaces the BC-355C.

It turned out that I didn't go to the city that day, but when I do (hopefully soon) I'll be sure to program it.

For what it's worth, NYC secured a two-year narrowbanding waiver for the FDNY VHF frequencies, so they may be around for a while longer. There is no difference between what you'd hear on VHF vs UHF when it comes to the borough dispatch frequencies (with the exception that the Bronx and Staten Island share 154.190, but have separate UHF frequencies).

I will keep that in mind for the next time I go up there... I was planning on seeing Rescue 1 so I thought it would be neat to program the Manhattan frequencies in the scanner to see what they (and others) were up to.
