I use Panasonic Eneloops and get at least 8 hours and I get the low battery warning.
I had some older rechargeables and they didn't last very long.
I'm thinking the batteries are dropping below a critical voltage and the radio shuts down before it is able to give the low battery warning.
I say try some high quality rechargeables, Costco had the Eneloops for $22 on sale.

just bought the Panasonic Eneloop Pro Batteries with charger

What size battery are you using? (ie 1000mAh, 1500 mAh ect.) If you are using the 1000 mAh batteries you will get about 4 hours of use. My suggestion is to use the 2500 mAh batteries for longer life.

I recently purchased the Panasonic Eneloop Pro Batteries to replace my RS 2500 mAH Batteries that I bought with the 668 Scanner which only last less than 3 hours. These Eneloop Pro Batteries 2550 mAH received rave reviews which is one of the reasons I bought them. Got them yesterday and plugged them up, charged overnight and now they are in my Pro 668.
I plan to see just how long they are going to last in the scanner and I will report back.
BTW, if they last a full 8 hours I would be excited.
Stay tuned for my results with the Eneloop Pro Batteries.

ALERT 4.08 4.08

I'm fully up to date on my 668 and my values were higher than these ones, so the update didn't change them for me.

Thank you for sharing these values, basically a 0.10v drop for each battery level.
Which sets each cells estimated terminal voltage of each cell at 1.02v. (Battery completely dead)
I will try them out today.

My Duracell DX1500's set terminal voltage at 0.9v or at 0.8v with high discharge rate.
I don't think the scanner's 500mA max is considered high, battery documentation says 1C-3C is considered high discharge, so 2500mAh-7500mAh (2.5Amp-7.5Amp).
At 500mAh that's 0.2C of a 2500mAh battery which is very low discharge.

Follow Up on Eneloop Pro Batteries

Well, I said that I would I would reply back on my new Eneloop Pro Batteries. I can honestly say that I work 8 hours days and I am getting better than a day and a half out of a single charge with probably at least 2 hours in reserve left using these in my Pro-668 Scanner.
These batteries with the charger aren't cheap but worth the extra money if you want to listen "all day" to your Pro-668.
My RS Batteries are now charged and ready for "back up duty", but, their getting lonely just sitting there.

The Panasonic Eneloop Pros are the only batteries I use now in my scanners along with a Powerex Maha MH C9000 charger. I have tried Duracell and Energizer rechargeables, neither perform as well.
