I have been attempting to update the firmware on my Radio Shack PRO-668 scanner using the CPUUpdater software provided by Whistler. I followed the instructions to enter CPU update mode by holding down the menu button and plugging in the USB cable. The device successfully entered CPU update mode, but when I tried to proceed with the firmware update, I encountered an error message stating, "The scanner currently contains no CPU application code! This update utility contains version 4.8."

Unfortunately, the update process seems to have wiped the CPU firmware from the scanner, leaving it in an unusable state. The device remains stuck in CPU update mode, and I have been unable to revert it back to its normal operation or successfully apply the firmware update. I've tried several troubleshooting steps, including unplugging the device, using different USB cables, and attempting to reinitialize the update process, but nothing has worked. Windows also fails to recognize the device, making it impossible to access the scanner's file system or perform a manual reset through the settings menu.

Does your 668 have the legacy upgrade? If not, you cannot use Whistler firmware. The last Radio Shack firmware update was version 2.5. If your 668 has the legacy upgrade, there is an updater specifically for the upgraded scanners. Legacy Scanner Downloads If you tried to update your non-upgraded 668 using the Radio Shack iSCAN software, the servers are no longer available.

Did you buy the scanner new? If scanner were new, you would need to send it to Whistler to have the upgrade done to convert it to a Whistler WS1080. If the scanner is new and has not had the upgrade, you need to use the Radio Shack firmware. There was also an unofficial hack to add DMR to the 668. If your scanner has that hack, trying to update it with the Whistler firmware can brick the scanner. There is an additional charge to upgrade the scanners that have been bricked due to the hack. Did your opening screen show Radio Shack or Whistler before you lost the firmware?

Buddrousa and RaleighGuy, I know the opening screen of the 668 shows Whistler after the hack. How about after the legacy upgrade? Do you know if there are any differences in the display between the hack and the official upgrade to be able to tell the difference? I never had a PRO-668, but I do have a WS1080. Thanks!

After legacy update it shows Whistler, I do not remember with the hack, but since the hack allowed you to update to Whistler firmware I would think it too would say Whistler.

Raleighguy is correct but I had rather have the Whistler Upgrade and get all the new Firmware along with just adding DMR.
Thank you very much!

I have the version 2.4 updater for the PRO-668, but it is too large to attach. The latest version is 2.5. Someone may have it in a dropbox for you to download. If you can find someone in your area with the updater, you may be able to get your scanner updated or get the updater to do it.

Both the official upgrade and the hack will show the whistler logo...if you're unsure you could brick it and have to send it to whistler to be fixed and get the official upgrade. You do NOT need to hold the menu button to get it in cpu upgrade mode, that was the psr-800.

SCANNER off. plug in usb cable to COmputer, wait for the computer to recognize it, if it doesn't then you need the COMPORT driver installed or reinstalled. USE the legacy CPU updater from Whistlergroup.com and follow the prompts...if it is hacked this will brick it, if not it should fix it.

Does your scanner show Radio Shack or Whistler on the opening screen when you turn it on or does it go directly to the update screen? If it shows Radio Shack, you can use the Radio Shack CPU updater to get it working again. Try the Radio Shack CPU updater first. Better yet, send it to Whistler for the Lagacy Upgrade. It will make your life a lot easier, add DMR, and improve scanner performance in the process. Here is the link to have the upgrade done: Upgrade Your Pro-18, Pro-668 or PSR-800 Scanner If you have the official upgrade, you will be able to use the Whistler WS1080/WS1088 EZ Scan software to program the scanner and update the firmware and database.
USE the legacy CPU updater from Whistlergroup.com and follow the prompts...if it is hacked this will brick it, if not it should fix it.
I wouldn't do that. If your scanner has the hack, there will be an additional charge to fix it. If the scanner is bricked, it will cost even more. Try the Radio Shack CPU updater first.

We have already determined that whistler is on the display when powered on.

If it is hacked and 100% works, then no extra charge, for the legacy upgrade. if it hacked ( Says whistler but no DMR reception) then it is about $120 to replace the logic board and upgrade. SO rol the dice and see, or just spend money anyway send it in for an upgrade it may or may not already have had done?

Where? I never got an answer if the scanner showed Radio Shack or Whistler before it lost the firmware. The display the OP got when tried to do the update was that the update utility is version 4.8. That does not mean the scanner has version 4.8.

We need some clarification....when the scanner last worked, On the LCD display, when you power it on, did it say Radio shack or Whistler?

for another datapoint on my 668, i absolutely sent it to whistler for dmr, it seemed like the only way i could have some assurance it would continue to be supported at all and get database updates.

on boot it proclaims itself to be a whistler product ever since.

Man seeing that RadioShack and iScan logo really brings back some memories. It is mentioned in the upgrade page that it becomes a WS1080 after the upgrade.
