I just decided to get "excited" again about scanning the past couple of weeks. (I started doing sports photography part time for the local paper and they have me doing 10 days of Indy 500 coverage. I figure I should get my scanner programmed.)

Anyway, I bought a USB programming cable from GRE to set up my PRO-95 using the free software from Starsoft. The software and cable worked great.

I then got curious if the old PRO-79 I had was worth anything and could be programmed. It didn't have a PC interface port but a little more research told me it could be done via the headphone jack and that the ProLink software was the best software available.

I decided to see if the GRE cable would work since I already had it. The PRO-79 was not listed on the GRE website as a supported model. Well, it did work after I got the settings correct. (OK, I tried to use it without reading the ProLink instructions.)

The key is to set up the comm port and scanner model and then close and then open ProLink again.

The GRE USB Cable is HERE. It included a stereo mini to mono mini adapter and some software on a CD-ROM to install. It defaulted to comm 4 on my laptop and there were no other comm ports in use (or available).
