Does anyone know if there is a mod for the pro 83/84 that would enable the backlight to remain on all the time? 15 seconds just isn't enough time sometimes.

There is one. There is a .pdf file that has pictures and a step by step
instructions on how to do it.
It's downloadable in the files section of the Pro-83 yahoo group. You can
subscribe to the group and then have access to all files and mods there for the 83.
