does anybody ever have this problem with a 92??? this is my second 92 and have never encounterd this before.. recently when i turn the scanner on it will not pick up anything including normal fm, or am frequencies.. the trunked systems when lowering squelch will have no chopping noise, but a normal squelch noise. then when u watch the mot. on the bottom, not normal ids will come up. they will change for example from009876, to 69444 and so on. this will happen for a couple of days and then all the sudden it works fine.. this is the 92b. please help scannerface27...// oh also if you turn squelch up it just scans...

I would check the BNC connector on the scanner to make sure it's tight to scanner case, check it for solder break at pc board. for starters. also make sure center pin on antenna fits tight enough inside the contacts of the bnc connector I've had to take a pointed awl and gently, pry the contacts closer together on a few bnc jacks for a tight fit on center pin of the antenna rubber ducky etc. good luck!

Sounds like the osilator has quit or is quitting now is the good time to upgrade to a 164 as I have noticed the 92/2067 has always been a little deaf compaired to my other scanners.

PRO-92 problems

I took a look at a PRO-92 for someone a couple of years ago that had a similar problem as this. The problem turned out to be a bad (ground) connection between two circuit boards. I was lucky to find it. I had the scanner open and running on the bench, and took a volt meter to each side of the connectors that connect circuit boards together. In every case the voltage should be zero because a good connection will have near zero resistance/impedance. It seems that the connectors oxidize after the years.

First, I'm not questioning your diagnosis. I'm just curious since I have a 92 with this condition. If the joint is bad, how does this allow the scanner to start receiving after the unit has been on for x amount of time?

Also, any recollection of which two boards, again so I might be able to fix mine?

164 upgrade

thanks buddrousa i took your advice i just got back from radio shack and got the pro-164. i figured what the hell its an upgrade from both my bc245xlt, and my pro-92.. and wow what a good price for only 149.99 they were completley out of the 106 and you cant even get it from there website... i figured try this one for 30 days and if i dont like it they will have the 106's in about 2-3 weeks, according to the rs people. thanks again..

no problem scannerface I have a 2067 and it is a little deaf but i use it in high rf areas on the 163 164 106 and 197 you have to use the new usb cable the old serial will not work and use the mono adapter on the older and no adapter on the new line 163 164 106 and 197. Enjoy your new scanner.

I didn't try and understand the chemistry of the problem. The contacts are not gold and so they do tarnish after time. I burnished all of the contacts and the problem was gone. I don't recall which specific boards it was now. All I remember is that the unit was pretty much dead and after I found the problem and cleaned the contacts I could not get it to fail (even after letting it sit powered down and cold for 24 hours).
