Pro-93 Pro-94 Pro-95 Pro-97 Pro-528 i need help please.

Hi everyone iam new to the Radio Shack Scanner Business..I would like to spend some time learning about the scanners and everything they can do.i would like to listen, to alot of stations and do lots of things.

My next door neighboor is goin to have a garage sale this monday, and he has lots of scanners. the scanners are PRO-93 PRO-94 PRO-95 PRO-97, I want to buy one of the scanners, and i was asking him wich one was better, but he dosent know about that.because these scanners where hes brothers but he moved a while back, and left the scanners at his home.and told him he could sell them.

My question is. ive been reading some of the articles,in this forum.and by far ive read that the best scanner is the PRO-96 But that scanner cost like $400.00 . wich is a little to much for me.right now, maybe i can buy it in a couple of years but not right now.

I would like to know wich scanner PRO-93 PRO-94 PRO-95 PRO-97 PRO-528 is better.and why.

please everyone tell me your opinions.. and post a little bit about. why i should choose a specific scanner

everyone that can give a hand with their opinion and thoughts.i will be thankfull

thank you and god bless all

P.S

sorry guys i forgot to mention he also has the PRO-528...i just edited right now

Go with the 97. It is the newest. It has a great display, military air capability and also the signal stalker feature. It also has a great back lit display and keypad. I think you would get the most use out of that one. The others are nice but they are older and lack certain features that the 97 has.

The signal stalker is just neat as hell. It will grab signals out of the air with no programming needed at all.

Best scanner...

Go with the 97 and get WIN97 from Don Star for about $30 in order to program the unit via PC...or.....get the 95 and get WIN95 for free.....

The WIN 97 programming software is just for programming the scanner. It shows the contents (frequencies, talkgroups, and settings) of the radio laid out like a spreadsheet. It just simplifies programming, and allows you to save the programming in a file for loading later in the event you loose the programming or somehow mess it up.

PRO-97, etc....

Actually, the way that these modern day cheap (GRE/RS) scanners are designed, 1 is NOT enough. You need several if you plan on following any incidents and then continue to monitor other channels. I've got no less than 2 of each model in my tagline, and am usually running one '97 and one '95. They act way differently (even when connected to the same outdoor antenna).

The "problem" with the PRO-94 & PRO-528 is that they do not have alpha or "text tags". This is the ability to label each channel in plain text (up to 16 characters). When you're only scanning 20 or so channels, it's not a big problem. But when you've got 100s (my PRO-97s have 1100 channels each), it is necessary to be able to label them.

Regarding WIN97; there is really nothing the program does that the scanner can not do on its own. Actually I manually programmed my '97s when I first got them; and it took me over a week to do (with everything already worked out on paper). But what happened is that some new channel/frequency came along. The scanner does not provide a way to "insert" a new channel between two already programmed. WIN97 does. In other words, WIN97 is like having an automatic transmission; which for most is better than a standard transmission. You can live w/o it, but why? (once you know how to drive either way.
