I'm helping a friend who bought a PRO-94 scanner a while back. It is doing something that seems a bit strange while trunking a Motorola Type II 800 MHz system.

I have programmed the bank as an E2-800 system, entered the frequencies, entered a set of the talk group IDs and pressed scan.

All is well and good except that rather than just scanning the IDs, the scanner acts like it is scanning a bank that has both conventional frequencies and a trunked system. I can see it scan the entered frequencies (all show an M and the display shows trunked), then it goes to ID banks and scans them.

If the scanner catches talk while scanning the frequency list, it will stop on that frequency and not show any talk group info.

I really don't want to reset the scanner and do this over again, so if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate the input. I think I know why I took the PRO-94 I bought back within a couple of days.

Is it a 94, 94A, or 94B? The 94 will not scan conv. and trunked in the same bank. You also need to be in the area of the system to be able to program the id's. That is one reason I do not like the Pro-94's which is made by Uniden. I do not know if all Uniden's are like this.

It's a 94B and I can pick up the system (Newport News) in the house with the rubber duck. Like I said, it seems to scan the trunked system frequencies as if they are conventional. Even to the point of stopping on them if they are active.

Thanks for the response Eng 74.

It sounds like something in your programming is wrong. Go back and give it a fresh look.

The 94's are manufactured by Uniden for RS... Same with the 2052, the new 2051 is its replacement... with a few new additions....and its also a Uniden made for RS scanner.... As is the 83......and several others.

As you should know by now... Radio Shack is NOT a manufacturer any more.. Just a marketer... Both Uniden and GRE make the scanners, RS sells em under thier label....

As for the problem at hand... Firstly make sure you set up all the freqs properly for the TRS,... and double check that you only have the Trunked freqs.. not the Conventional Mutual Aid ones in the set... Again make sure they are set to E-2 800.... Make sure you have the proper TG's....

Special Note- Private Calls, and many Phone Patches will not come through. Also- Be very sure this is a pure Type II system, not a IIi Hybrid as you may get "interesting" results from the Type I TG's...

If you have properly progged the system in, you should not get the reactions that your getting. One trick to try is put ONLY the TRS in a bank... No other freqs.

The 94's are not too shabby, but are better as a secondary scanner for unravelling systems.... And they are awesome as a EDACS monitor in conjunction with say an 92 B for finding correct LCN's...

Well I checked to see how many systems my friend had programmed into his 94 and reset it. Then I reloaded the two systems closest to home, Newport News with its E2-800 system and Hampton with its EDACS system. Hampton works just fine, but Newport News is still acting up.

However, I am beginning to believe the scanner has problems. I opened the owners manual from the RS page tried to follow the instructions to add TGIDs to the group banks. The manual key doesn't seem to be working. When I press manual while in the ID search mode, nothing happens. When the scanner stops on a talk group, and I press manual, the scanner starts scanning as soon as the talk stops.

As my friend lives close to the Newport News/York county line, I told him to save his pennies and buy the BC 396 when it comes out.

Hopefully I'll be able to reprogram the talk groups for Newport News so he can at least scan the important stuff and by pass the school busses.
