PRO-95 Speaker Audio Issue?

I have a very lightly used PRO-95 that I've owned since new. Recently, I pulled it off the shelf, put in fresh batteries and noticed that the audio through the internal speaker is very low.

I assumed a failing audio amp or bad electrolytics. However, I plugged in an external speaker and the audio came through loud and clear. I inserted and removed the speaker plug from the headphone jack a few times, thinking maybe oxidized contacts but that did nothing.

Has anyone encountered this issue before and perhaps has a solution? Don't want to spend a lot of time on it as the easy and obvious answer is to use headphones or a clip on speaker. Thanks!

Low or no audio due to dirty contacts on the headphones jack is a very common problem with scanners. A good contact cleaner would take care of the problem.

Thanks! I'll give it a try. I was just not sure if the contacts were the issue as the audio output is normal through the headphone jack.

There are a set of contacts feeding the speaker which open when you plug into the headphones jack.

hey, it worked !
that little red circle shows the connect/disconnect to the speaker.
the plug is in so the speaker is out/disconnected.
that might be where the problem is.

Thanks! I'll report back if I have any success. There is still a lot to listen to that is analog around here, so I'll be glad to put this radio back in use.

Probably the issue as shown in video below.

If it was a connector issue it would be either no volume or staticy - if it was intermittently connecting.
I suppose the speaker might be failing, but I feel strongly its one of the amplifier components that feeds the speaker, audio section on the board is failing or failed.

Look at, but skip where he sees as we know the electronic 'goop' hehe. He skipped the pulling off the cover for some reason. I would think a flat screwdriver to gently prior up all the tabs would work.

The audio through the speaker is low and "tinny", but normal through the headphone jack either into phones or an external speaker. I can't rule out the contacts just yet, or perhaps the speaker has gone bad? I'm going to open it up later and look at the contacts

In the video, his volume through the speaker is much louder than mine through the internal speaker.

Through an external speaker/phones, my local WX station sounds normal - not off frequency at all.

If the contacts are not the problem, then it has to be a bad speaker, I would think?
