Pro 96 Digital Underwater

I have had my Pro 96 9 months now. I monitor 3 Digital Trunked Systems and 3 Analog Systems. All the transmissions on Digital sound like they are underwater while the Analog systems are crystal clear.

I am beginning to wonder if it the radio out of wack based on not hearing others complain about this. Any thoughts?

Also when you are monitoring these systems are the dispatch channels usually nice and clear. I find that most of the time the mobiles and portables are the ones that don't sound the greatest. However the dispatch consoles , radios sound clear as a bell.

Yep - that's also true of the units the users are using - be it NexTel, Cellular, or Land Mobile. But HEY! It's DIGITAL! It doesn't matter if it sounds better, because it JUST IS better - because it's DIGITAL. :roll:

I find that the dispatch is a little better but if I were purchasing a digital system I think I would vote no and save the taxpayers money. There may be other advantages but I am not impressed with digital.

I think backround noise comes across kind of gurgled. I've noticed that when a portable or mobile transmits in a quiet enviroment, the sound quality is much better. Also a big part of it is how you talk into the radio. But I still like analog better.

Wind is a big factor, as well...either from Mother Nature or your mouth. The vocoder can't differentiate between wind and voice, so you'll get really bad audio in a windy environment, or when breathing right into the mic...

Aslo, I find that sometimes turning the AGC off with the FUNC, MAN combo can sound better. But then you'll get the varying audio that the Unidens also get...

If anyone would like, I can send them some samples of digital recorded from my own PRO-96. It'd be best if we could do it in real-time on an IM client...I have Yahoo!, MSN, ICQ, and AIM (iChat)...

I don't understand why agencies don't do UHF or VHF trunking! There are enough abandoned freqs. in the 453 & 460 Mhz range for at least two systems here in Denver.

Oh, it's coming! With several Statewide P25 systems being design and implemented on VHF as we speak.

Look at what Alaska is doing right now, they took it a step further and combined federal, state and local government on a statewide system and on top of that, they got waivers to use Federal spectrum in the 138-144MHz band for input frequencies on the system.

That's good news. I hope it happens in Colorado, but so many bought into the statewide 800 Mhz APCO25 digital system.
