I don't know which to throw out the window first the new scanner or my laptop computer...... :x . I seem to be having difficulty uploading to my scanner. At first I thought it was my laptop (after spending $56.00 on a Belkin usb/serial portable adapter). I'm using WIN96 (On the 30 day trial). The computer is telling me it is uploading to the scanner. Then nothing shows up in the scanner. If anyone can help out it would be very helpful. I am fairly new to the whole trunking thing as here in Mayberry (er Oxford County) we never have had a real trunking system.

Hi Gymbag,

First I would suspect that Serial to USB adapter. One way to check if it is the adapter is to try programming your '96 with a system that has a serial port. If your Pro96 programs fine VIA serial port then that adapter is the problem. Same goes for if your converting for USB to serial, try programming via USB and if it works fine it's the adapter.

If not then check to see if the baud rates between your scanner and computer are the same.

Also check the software to see if it's sending the info to the right place. ie. COM1, COM2, USB, etc.

The last two are highly unlikely because if they were actually wrong, the software should have "timed out", or had some sort of comm error. But you never know.

Tried another adapter

Well off to Rat Shack this morning and bought yet another adapter this one is aSerial Port adapter DB9 MALE to DB25 MALE. Same thing it says it's writing to scanner and then nothing???????????????? It is getting very frustrating to say the least.

For any serial communication link to work, both sides of the wire must agree on the settings. Verify the line speed, number of data bits, number of stop bits, parity, and flow control are set identically on the radio and the computer port.

There is a setting in WIN96 for Extra Write Time for some USB serial ports. Also, is the scanner cable a 20-289?
