I've been experimenting with a type IIi hybrid system in my area and I have a question in regards to the Pro-96 and Type I talkgroups. I have my Pro-96 and 246T both tracking the same system, both using the same fleetmap. What I have noticed is the 2 scanners will show type I talkgroups differently. For example, when the 246T shows a talkgroup of 247-1, the Pro-96 shows 2047-1. Is this just a quirk of the Pro-96, or something funky with my fleetmap settings?

Thanks!

The PRO-96 displays talk groups in a block with size code 1 (S01) in the format BFFF-S (B=block, F=fleet, S=subfleet). This is because size code 1 has seven bits for the Fleet value, for 128 different fleets - this requires three digits to display all the possible values.

The PRO-96 displays all other size codes (S02 - S14) as BFF-SS, because all of their possible fleet and subfleet values will fit in two digits.

What does the 246T display if you have an ID like 2101-3 (that is, a fleet value of 101), when block two's size code is S01 (or 'A' if Mot or Trunker format)?

Thanks for the reply Don, that's interesting. I haven't seen any activity on a fleet # such as 101... But I'm 99% sure I'm using the correct size code (I've seen a codeplug for a radio on this system and it showed a Motorola size code of 'A'). Maybe the 246 just omits the 0 on fleets less than 100? Might be a question I can foreward to UPMan.

I was thinking that myself. You could look at other IDs, with other size codes, to see if they're always displayed as BFF-SS or if the 246 drops leading zeroes anywhere else. That is, if you had a block with a size code of S02 (where the PRO-96 would display something like 306-03), what does the 246 display? 306-03? 36-3? 306-3?

I know with a size code of 3, the Pro-96 shows 200-01 where the 246 shows 200-1 (so does my BCT-8... and I don't recall what my 780 shows).

Any info on size 11? I should've asked about that one in the first place - it has a 4-bit subfleet and should require two digits (size code 3 only has a 3-bit subfleet and would never need more than 1 digit).

Size codes 4 and 12-14 are even more interesting: no fleet bits.

I do like how the GRE scanners display type I IDs. They're essentially "fixed" in their format. When looking at a PRO-96 type I ID, I know exactly which digits represent block, fleet, and subfleet.

I don't have any Uniden radios (hence my queries about how the 246 displays IDs), so I can't comment on them. Of course, it's entirely possible I'd like how they do it, too ;) That is, if they always trim leading zeroes from fleet and subfleet values, it wouldn't be hard to figure out the B/S/F fields: first digit is block, remaining digits to hyphen are fleet, digits after hyphen are subfleet (which is, come to think of it, exactly what I see on the GRE radios, with the addition of leading zeroes to get a fixed field width).

It's probably just a matter of what one is used to seeing.
