Pro-96 not from Radio Shack

Anybody buy a Pro-96 from other then Radio Shack and had warranty work done by RS?
I got one Feb. of this year from Grove and when I took it to RS to get the audio control fixed and the 1.3 upgrade, I was refused and RS said that non-rs stores only sell warehouse seconds and damage! :?

I bought mine from Scanners Unlimited. It took a few calls to various stores, but I eventually found one that gave me no hassle. The others threatened to charge me for the repair, even though customer support in Ft Worth said they shouldn't.

If you go to http://www.radioshack.com/Locator/Locator.asp and plug in Brasstown, NC you will not get Grove as an authorized dealer. Read the first sentence of your warrenty on the back of the owner's manual.

I also bought mine from Scanners Unlimited in November, 2003. I live about half way between Dallas and Fort Worth. Therefore, I hand carried my unit to the Fort Worth service center last July when they first started doing the 1.3 upgrade. They made a copy of my receipt from Scanners Unlimited and did the upgrade work with no questions asked. I was back in the car and headed for home with my upgraded scanner in about twenty minutes after I got there.

Here is the short version:

V1.1 is the original version.
V1.2 fixes the TG lockout (above CH 4-08 ) bug.
V1.3 fixes the 48xxx TG reception problem.
(47872, 47888, 47904, 47920, 47936, 47952, 47968, 47984,
48000, 48016, 48032, 48048, 48064, 48080, 48096, 48112)

Note that the 48xxx TG problem only affects ANALOG TGs, not digital.

That said, there seems to be a number of systems potentially affected.

Here is a little more info summarized:

Whether it is necessary to upgrade depends on whether you want to listen
to any of the affected TGs. Bug #1 is easily worked around (fill up TG
bank 4 first). If there are no TGs you want to listen to, odds are there
never will be. I decided it was better off for me to not lose my scanner
for 6 weeks for an upgrade I really didn't need - even though I do
travel to an area with an affected system. There aren't any TGs I can
live without as much as losing my 96 for 6 weeks (That's how long it was
running when I was still under warranty). It may be down to 2 weeks now
if you are really lucky, but I still prefer to not lose 2 weeks worth of
use over an upgrade I may never use.

The upgrade is free as long as your unit is under warranty, and is about $50 if it is not still under warranty. If you have to have the upgrade, but
can wait, you may be better off waiting until the end of your 1-year
warranty period just in case they come out with V1.4.

Can anyone tell me were I can get frequencys for Merseyside in the Uk please.

Just bought the Pro 96 from the states and need to set up scanner :wink:

Does this mean I would only pay $50 including parts for an upgrade if it's not in warranty? Or is that just the labor cost, and I would also have to pay for the part, which I would assume isn't cheap?

The upgrade is free as long as your unit is under warranty, and is about $50 if it is not still under warranty. If you have to have the upgrade, but can wait, you may be better off waiting until the end of your 1-year warranty period just in case they come out with V1.4.
