Pro-96 on a laptop

I am getting a laptop soon and I was wondering if the pro-96 will connect to it with the regular cable or does it not have a spot for the cable??

It just uses the COM Port..Just like your PC.

I think Dell still has a serial port on the Inspiron 8600. But, USB to serial cables are available everywhere.

I have a Latitude and it has a COM Port..

Try to find one with an RS232 (DB9) serial port if you can. I was able to load frequencies though a USB-to-Serial Port adapter on a PRO-96, and PRO-2096 with no problem. However, when it came to the Uniden BC780-XLT, using ARC780, it wasn't supported, and I was unable to get it to work. It did work with the BC796D, and ARC250PRO, for loading frequencies, and control. However it did not work for flashing the radio's firmware, or the digital cards firmware. That operation still requires a true serial port.

So you'll probably save yourself some frustration down the road if you stick with a serial port.

That's a good question! I had both the PRO-96, and the PRO-2096, and they were both working great! Then, because of all the changes going on with frequency assignments, I wanted something I could control with the computer, and log the results, to search out new, and unknown frequencies, as well as talk groups. Neither of the Radio Shacks are designed for computer control. So, being that I had just bought the PRO-96, I returned it for a refund, and ordered a BC796D. Then I had an opportunity to buy a mint BC780-XLT, which are getting harder to find, and they make excellent MilAir scanners. So I sold the PRO-2096, and bought the BC780-XLT. Then, being anal like I am at times, I decided I wanted both my scanners to be "Digital" capable. So I've already sold the BC780-XLT! Now I'm sitting on the fence, as to buying another PRO-96, or waiting for the new Uniden hand-held. I've since found out about PRO96COM software, which turns your PRO-96, and/or PRO-2096 into a pretty slick digital system seeker!

I have an Inspiron 8600...unfortunately it only has USB and not a RS232 (DB9) serial port. I purchased one of the adapter cables (USB - DB9) but have not had any sucess in getting it to work.

I agree with MacombMonitor, you would be better off if you could find a laptop with the legacy serial on it.

I have an Inspiron 8600...unfortunately it only has USB and not a RS232 (DB9) serial port. I purchased one of the adapter cables (USB - DB9) but have not had any sucess in getting it to work.

Some of them aren't worth much. Many people seem to have good luck with the one sold by Radio Shack. (I prefer one of the Belkin adapters.)

I have a new HP Pavillion 4900. It only had a USB port. Bought the RS USB/Serial Adapter and it works like a charm loading up and down on the Pro 96. The adapter is not cheap though. I think I paid $50.00 for it.
