There is a Pro 96 I might be interested in but the antenna is really short (maybe 3-4 inches). Will there be any reception with this? If it would need an antenna how much would just an antenna cost or can you just buy the antenna?

Yes you can buy an antenna, most antennas for handhelds are made for specific frequencies. Many of us use different antennas for different bands we listen to. They can be found for anywhere from just a couple of bucks to $50. Base antennas can also be use but I'm talking ones that go on the radio itself.
