As far as I know only on the 94 series does SAME Alert work whilst scanning.... Not sure if it changed on the 94B.. but it worked that way on the 94, and 94A.

I am a little confused by your original question. Do you mean will the WX alert function work while scanning regular channels (banks 0 -9) or do you mean will it work while scanning the WX frequencies? I was further confused the the responses.

If what you are asking is, can you set your Pro-96 up so that you may scan normally (conventional and TRS things you have programmed) and still catch weather alerts for your area using SAME alerting; then the answer is yes. If you mean something else, then I guess I don't know.

If you wish to monitor your local WX frequency for alerts in your area, you must set the Priority Channel to the WX channel for your area, set up the SAME codes for your area of interest and turn <PRI> on. It will then check (as it does for any Priority channel) the Pri Ch every 2 seconds and when it receives an alert based on they SAME code(s) you set up, it will open squelch on the priority channel.

Is this what you were after?

Actually, the PRO-94 has Limited SAME (LAME...my acronym, not official). It does not allow you to enter the FIPS county code, but does decode and vary its alert based on the level of alert received (Test, Statement, Watch, Warning...). The PRO-96 has SAME and lets you input a FIPS, but otherwise has similar capabilities as the PRO-94.

To use LAME, you must put the scanner in the SAME Alert mode. In this mode, the scanner sits on the WX channel with the audio muted until an alert occurs. It will not activate on a SAME header while scanning.

The SAME part of the WX alert is a short data burst (as short as 1 second) repeated 3 times. In order to ensure that the scanner actually hears an entire SAME message, the scanner must continuously monitor the WX channel. To do this while scanning would require the scanner to have two independant receivers. The PRO-94 does not.

I cannot find in the O/M that the PRO-94 has WX priority (but it makes sense, and I tend to recall that it does). In this mode, the scanner scans or monitors as usual, but checks the WX channel every few seconds (typically 5 seconds) for the presence of a 1050 Hz tone. This tone is transmitted after the SAME data, typically for about 10 seconds. The scanner really only needs to check for this tone every 8 seconds or so. If the tone is present, then the scanner alerts you and switches to the WX transmission. However, it cannot tell you the alert level, as this information was sent prior to the 1050 Hz tone and is not repeated after the tone.

Umm I have actually had it SAME Alert and Scanning.. in Charleston. SC.. and it went off without a hitch. Maybe I am just the wierd egg in the basket... but it did work....

It was scanning conventionl freqs between the three trunked system I had in it.. and kicked in on the WX Alert tones with msg.

:?: How did we get off topic to the Pro-94? The question was about a Pro-96 and it works just as I said it does. I have no idea how that relates to the way the Pro-94 operated and really it is not relevant to the question at hand. :?

Read pages 64-66 of the manual, and using knowledge of SAME codes, once again shows that everyone here saying it can do SAME and scan is incorrect. We've had this discussion before.

SAME codes are sent out before the tone. In weather priority it checks the weather freq every 2 seconds for a TONE. If it was checking for a quick databurst of SAME codes it would miss most if not all of the message. If you want the SAME code you have to have the radio in SAME _standby_ mode without scanning.

Read the manual.

TO: rdale
Rob,
I must apologize, upon reviewing the recommended pages in the Pro-96 manual, I find indeed (in the note on page 66) that FIPS settings are ignored when WX is used as the Priority Channel. The only excuse I can offer is that when I was using it in this fashion, the only time it went off, the alert concerned me (or was a test) so I made an assumption. It was wrong.

Mark,
I need to crawfish on my answer (I think you will get that  ) as apparently Rob was correct (as he usually is) and I was wrong.

We need to continue to bug NWS and have them send the SAME code before _and_ after the tone! If that were the case, then a scanner could do weather priority and after detecting a tone could then wait for the SAME code to determine whether or not to alert. Until that point we're at a disadvantage.

Or even just after would work. The source I asked said that they use the 1050 Hz alert tone as an alert for the SAME units. That seems odd since all SAME units I know of generate their own alert, but that's what I was told.

The reasoning given to me was that some EAS sources record the audio after the tone is given, so that if they resend the SAME code it would "distract" people hearing the warning.
