My Pro-96 has 10 banks... and they are full... but I have read about the virtual banks... what are those? Can this scanner REALLY hold more than 500 channels?
yes..

Hit PGM FUNC PGM
1 Save Pick a Number

then
2 Load Pick a Number

you need to be sure you save (or have a backup of your config on your PC (Win96))
Also the V-Folders have some data preloaded from the factory.
It would help to read the manual, as it explains it quite a bit better than I can :p

<edit> If you forget to save your current config (V-Folder) before you load a different one (V-Folder) it will be gone..

The Virtual Scanner Memory Management system stores 11 memory configurations, each with 500 channels and 1500 talkgroups for a total of 5500 channels and 16,500 talkgroups.

You have 11 original memory bank locations, ten numbered V-scanner banks and one "scratch pad". The V-scanners are sort of like a file system, that can not be accessed all at once, but individually can be used to set up different monitoring locations or a set of conventional or trunked systems for special events.

If your V-scanners have not been erased, you should have old pre-programmed data for trunked systems from across the US grouped together by region.

It is much easier to access and manipulate your V-scanners using the Starrsoft Win96 program: http://www.starrsoft.com/software/win96/default.asp

See the Wiki also: http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Win96

The V-scanners can be accessed as Bala mentioned above.

The PRO-96 can hold up to 5500 channels, but only 500 of these are accessible at any one time. Then any one of the V-Folders (there are 10) may be swapped out as the active folder.

The V-Folders do come preloaded with a group of common high population areas. These may be changed to support your individual tastes. I'd make sure you save these in case you ever visit LA, NYC, Fort Worth, Dayton or Tucson (among those in the preloads).

I'd make one bank of the V-Folders a save location for your primary most used local settings and the other nine V-folders for what ever you want. Then when you want to swap out, you have your primary bank set in memory.

Wow.. I need to download the manual... I bought the Pro-96 used and it didn't come with a manual but I have figured out a LOT just playing with Win96, RR database and forums, and unit.

I'll grab the manual online and look more into this.. sounds awesome!

Look also in WIN96 under the "Scanner" menu selection and "Virtual Scanner." Press "Refresh" on the popup window and it will show you what is saved there now (assuming your scanner is plugged in). I used the Virtual Scanner feature extensively this summer on vacation. I pre-loaded the Virtual Scanner folders before we left (about a 3000 mile drive round trip to Alberta Canada and back) with different sections of the trip. One for Kansas, one for Nebraska, one for North and South Dakota, one for Manitoba, ect.... Worked like a charm! Of course wouldn't you know, the area we were headed for everything was Nextel. But it was still fun listening along the route....
