Hello all, I have a quick question. I was wondering if there is a good site that I could get a descent lapel mic/speaker for my 96. I currently have the RadioShack one, but I'm not really happy with the sound quality.
Also, has anyone tried replacin' the built in speaker, if so, how does it sound, does it sound better than the factory, and where could I find one? Thanks all.

When hooking an external speaker to the earphone jack of the Pro-96, you have to deal with the audio damping circuit to bring volume levels to normal.

It is put there to protect your ears and Radio Shack's pocketbook, damn lawyers.

Is there anything I can do about that? Disconnect it somehow?
Well yes, but before I get to that let me point out a feature of this site. Up towards the top of the page there is a line of links. They are located just below where it says The Radio Reference Homepage: Forums. The second from the left is a Search link. If you click on that, you can find these answers for yourself.

Now to help you out, here are a couple of links, gotten by that method, just for you. Click on this link for an explanation of why and two solutions in regard to RS scanners in general and you can click on this link for a picture of how the mod was done internally on a Pro-95. I suspect the Pro-96 would look similar.

What about the VR2, VR3, and VR4? Anybody know what they do?

Nothing that you want to mess with without having access to a service bench with the proper equipment. (Unless, of course, you are a masochist who wants to have to send the radio into the repair shop and have to both wait and pay to get it back. {VBE GRIN!})

Ok, so I don't want to mess with them but can anybody tell me, by looking at theirs where they should be positioned? I know all radio's are not the same but I'm just one of those curious types...

I can pretty much assure you that unless RS/GRE is using .5% or less tolerance components in the PRO-96, or PRO-2096 that you'll be lucky to find more than maybe 1 out of a whole store full, if at all, that the positioning, value-wise or even looks-wise, will be the same. Some *may* be *close* but in this particular `game?' `close' really doesn't count as much as it used to. (The only *real* way you'll actually be able to tell if there is any difference would be to put each radio up on a `bench' hook up the proper test equipment and then run each one through the same tests. After that *then* you might have an idea and *might* also be able to *maybe* get them all within the same `ballpark' *if* you *really* need to and have the time to do it. [Like I think I said before... *If* you are *really* having problems then it'd probably be better to just send it back for service since they'll either be able to adjust, or whatever it or just outright replace it with a good one.] While it may seem to be a `neat' thing to do or look for it just isn't worth it unless you are a very rich masochist.)

Besides you know what they say about curiosity and cats... {VB GRIN!}

I got that T-shirt too, but nah I don't believe I mentioned that anything was wrong, just curious. Thats probably why I've been stabbed. (REMINDER TO ALL) Don't go into dark areas without a flashlight just because you're curious!
