I've programmed quite a few talkgroups into my Pro-96 but when a transmission comes in on some talkgroups the alpha tag doesn't show. I have the subgroups turned on. Any ideas?

If the Text tags aren't showing but the ID numbers are, just hit TEXT, and the tags should work again. Tell me if it works!

It was strange, some would show up and others wouldn't. Then some that showed once wouldn't the next time. Been playing with some settings and I set the Alpha Tag ID Delay to 0 (was 2000) and it looks like that may have solved it?!?!?

Could that have been causing the problem? I like to know how all these settings interact and if the change in this setting made a difference. TIA

Okay, first there is no setting called "Alpha Tag ID Delay" on the radio or in Win96.

There is an ID Delay, which is explained (as is almost everything else about the software) in the help file. However, since you seemed to miss that section I will quote it for you here:
ID Delay
  • This setting controls how long the scanner watches the trunked system’s control channel, after a transmission has ended, for a new transmission on the same talk group. The value is entered in milliseconds (i.e. a value of 2000 means 2 seconds).

OK, shoot me, I called it by the incorrect name. It is ID Delay that is located above the Alpha Tag item. No, I did not miss that info but I do not see how that explains the behavour that I seen. The other item missing is that the "help" balloon you get on mouse-over on almost all of the other items is not present for the ID Delay item.

In the end, at least to me, it doesn't explain the behavour that I see. Does this delay prevent Alpha Tags from showing some of the times?[/b]

NO, the ID delay will not affect TG Alpha Tags from showing up.

Are you just operating in CLOSED mode?
If not, are you adding TG's on the fly?
Which ID Lists do you have your programmed TG's stored in?

Just a thought, I don't have any RS scanners, but in Unidens, if you have the same system programmed in more than one bank and have X talkgroups programmed in bank 1 and Z talkgroups in bank 2, you will not see the X talkgroup alphatags in bank 2 when searching and vice versa.

I changed thngs around a lot over the past day and the problem seems to have gone away. I May have had the same TG programmed into a number of different banks.

I have since gone though and now I have one bank with analog (FM) channels.

A second bank running in open mode with the local trucked towers and known TGs programmed in but locked out.

A third bank running in closed mode with the local trucked towers and all "known" TG programmed in.

Since out areas has 100s of TGs I could find no way to program all of them into a single bank (of course), So I decided to just add new TGs as I see them in the open bank. Using this setup I have found 32 TGs active over the past day or so.

I most likely will try another scheme where I program in the TGs as found in Win96 and put them in closed banks and just leave one bank in open mode to catch the TGs that wouldn't fit in the first 7 banks. But this may be overkill... just have to find the right balance.

Anyways, still not sure what was causing some of the Alpha Tags not to display and not sure what I did to make it quit doing that. I don't think I have ever programmed something so many times in a week then I have with the Pro-96 and Win96... it's all a learning experence... that's for sure.

Thanks for listening to these ranting of this near madman... if I wasn't mad before this will drive me over the edge! ;) Maybe I need to put in a signature:

So many TGs, so little time!

Okay, your comments clear up some things (I think).

The Pro-96 (and 2096) work this way. You can program a TG in a specific bank as many times as you want, but only the lowest bank setting is ever displayed. So... lets just consider a single frequency bank (2 for example). If you program TG 17536 with alpha tag "XYZ Dispatch" into ID List position 1-01 (bank 2, ID List 1, position 1) and put others in on up from there and at some point prior to that had "captured TG" 17536 (by pressing <TRUNK> when it was talking) it was probably stored below ID List 1, like in ID List 0. If that was the case, everytime 17536 became active you would see "ID# 17536" instead of "XYZ Dispatch" becuase the "captured" one was lower in the scan list than the programmed one.

There is an advantage to this. You can easily go to specific programmed TG and hold on it by always sitting on the last TG (ID List 4-29) and when you want to hold on a specific TG (no matter where it is programmed elsewhere in that bank) you can just hit <PGM> <TRUNK> enter the TG# for example 17536, hit enter twice (becuase the radio will warn of duplicate ID) and then hit <FUNC> <TRUNK> and the radio will be holding on "XYZ Dispatch" in this example. That is providing the funny one is not progrmmed lower in the ID List. Of course if you hit <SCAN> you go back into regular Scan mode, but when you hit <PGM> <TRUNK> you are back on ID List position 4-29. The key to this is the radio only recognizes the lowest ID List entry of the same number.

Have fun. :D

Ah Ha! I think you hit the nail on head! I loaded up one of my older p96 files and yes I did have some of them entered twice... now that would explain it!

Advantages to doing this? I guess so but at this point I'm just stepping back and taking some baby steps until I get a better handle on everything the Pro-96 does.

Ya know, when you step up from an old BC60XLT where I was channel bound and think you have just have to fill up all 5 gigamillion channels now available... it goes downhill quickly from there!

Thanks for explaining all this... I'm slowly catching on.
