Not exactly Maryland related caveats, but some useful information nonetheless;

a. Become familiar with:

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Pro-96

There are useful things there - cheat sheets for programming, cable information, and a link to ....

b. Get Win96 - this is the wiki page for it, and notice that it shows how to set up the DC system correctly, if you ever want to use it there...go to the bottom of...

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Win96

c. Finally there's

http://henney.com/chm/files/p96files/

which might prove useful if you want to use some pre-made up p96 files.

This is very important Don't let any RS personnel program your 96 for you. They will use Scancat Lite Plus to do it, and it simply doesn't work all that well with the 96. For the most part - there are exceptions - most of the sales folks don't understand the scanner at all, and you'll end up reprogramming it in any case.

The 20-289 cable has officially, as I understand it, been discontinued - but the GRE USB cable seems to be working out fine. Do not let an otherwise well meaning sales person sell you something else - it's very likely not to work.

73s and GL with the new toy...Mike

I actually picked up the 20-047 cable, but since they didn't have any units in stock, I couldn't have programmed it onsite anyway...it's being shipped to the office...the unit is destined for a "disaster preparedness"-type project, so I still have to narrow down exactly which locales I have to dig up p96 files for anyway...I'm guessing I won't be able to avoid programming for at least the Baltimore-Washington corridor...

Thanks for the links....they'll give me something to read until the unit shows up.

Yay, it showed up!

Win96 definitely solves a load of programming problems....it did crash a couple of times while accessing RR.com, but fortunately I got in the habit of saving the P96 file after messing with each bank...

I even got brave and threw it on Shoutcast so the boss (who approved the purchase) could listen to Baltimore City... http://72.1.156.44:8000/listen.pls

One thing I did notice, depending on what you're listening to, is the occasional cutout...I was going to blame it on the fact that I had a weather channel set as the priority channel with five or six SAME codes programmed....or is it something else?

Other than that, I'm satisfied with the Pro-96/Win96 combination, and the RR.com support of Win96 is life/time-saving as all get out...I like being able to lower the "Low Battery" threshold so older rechargeables can still be used without the annoying beeping...
