I'm thinking of picking up one of these while its onsale as out city uses a Motorola Smartnet II analog trucking system and it looks like this will do it. I don't see additional battery holders available on their web site as an accessory, does anyone know if they are available?

yeah but good luck finding someone who knows to look at the RSU list.
You'll probably have to ask them. As far as time it depends on where you are at. Most of the orders I place get in within 4 business days. Unless they are out of them.

I must say I was dissapointed in RS for their switch back to Battery holders for REchargable vs Regular....
I had a Pro 94 w/ the switch.. I rarely use teh battery.. (20 min a day) so I'd like to be able to tell it I'm using alkaline.. most of the time.. but I hate switching holders.

What's the difference between the holders? I know that they seem really tight around the batteries (I have to slam them to remove the batteries) but I didn't realize there was a difference.

Battery holder differences

The "rechargable" holders have an additional connection to allow charging the batteries while in the radio while using an AC adapter. The regular holders do not have this additional connection. They are different to prevent attempting to recharge non-rechargable batteries for users that regularly use the AC adapter on their radio.

Personally, I never use an AC adapter and have rechargable batteries in both holders, which are charged up using a seperate charger. Assuming you never use an AC adapter for your radio, there is no significant difference between the two.

I like the battery holder idea, I like to have a set of rechargeables in and a spare set and then a set of non rechargeables for backup. I guess it comes from working with enterprise level servers makes me think about redundancy and backups.
What is the charging circuitry like, is it a smart charger which shuts off after the batteries reach full charge or is it a simple current limiting resistor? Anyone have schematics for it?

I don't think it shuts off when the batteries are fully charge.
I think it just keeps on charging.

Thats what I thought, most in device chargers do that, they just current limit to a low charge rate.
Thats why I like battery holders, I can have two and one can be in the radio/scanner while another is out with its batteries in the charger. Though I am looking to pick up one of the series NiMH charging IC's from someone like maxim to build a charger that can charge batteries in the pack.
