Over the next few days I’m going to have a few noobie questions so please forgive me if I ask a question that I made have missed in my forum searches.

Just bought a Pro-97 for use around South Carolina. My primary focus is SCHP.
I’ve found the control channels I need for the three Troops I’m interested in following and also have the talk group ID’s I need for each post.

Troop 01 A B C D DPS1/SHEP
Troop 04 A B C D
Troop 07 A B C

I understand there are multiple towers in each of the troops, each with it’s own control channel.

Here’s the scenario…
I plan on entering all the control channels for each Troop with each Troop’s Post ID Tags in Bank 0.

Here’s the big question…
  1. How does the Pro-97 deal with this action?
  2. Will it pull control channel from the closest tower with the strongest signal?
  3. Will I be able to move through the state and listen to the Troop for that area without having to make a manual change of tower selection?
Secondary question…
  1. Can I program like control channels in different closed banks then just turn on or off these banks when I want SO PD Fire or EMS?
  2. Sample idea…
  • Bank 0 SCHP Troops T01 T04 & T07
  • Bank 1 Columbia/Richland Fire (same control channel as T01D)
  • Bank 2 Richland County SO (same control channel as T01D)
  • Bank 3 Richland EMS (same control channel as T01D)
  • Bank 4 Lexington Fire (same control channel as T01C)
  • Bank 5 Lexington EMS (same control channel as T01C)
Thanks in advance....

Pro-97

You might do a search here on RR for "PRO-97" and you will find most, if not all, of your questions/thoughts have been answered before. And often there is not just one correct answer. Also others in your area may have already programmed a PRO-97 to do what you want.

It stops on the first active control channel it finds and ignores the rest. .. Unless you put a conventional channel in between the groups of freqs for each site. The conventional channel needn't be real (it can just be a frequency that doesn't talk) and it can not be locked out. You can put as many conventional freqs as you want between each group of freqs for trunked channel sites.

Will it pull control channel from the closest tower with the strongest signal?
Not necessarily.

Will I be able to move through the state and listen to the Troop for that area without having to make a manual change of tower selection?
If all frequencies are in the same bank, it will find ONE active control channel (per bank). If you space them with conventionals, as described above, it will find a control channel in each group all the time. If you want to turn off certain sites from time to time, you can either lock out those individual control channel frequencies, or perhaps put them in a separate bank. Keep in mind if you use multiple banks, and you are running with them closed, you'll need to duplicate the talkgroup IDs in each bank.

Secondary question…

  • Bank 5 Lexington EMS (same control channel as T01C)
If the above "agencies" all use the same sites or trunked system, then I suggest you use the SUB-BANKS of the PRO-97. Program all the (control channel) frequencies. Then program Columbia/Richland Fire into talkgroups 1-0-00 to 1-0-29. Program Richland county SO into talkgroups 1-1-00 to 1-1-29 ... and so on. There are 5 sub groups of 30 IDs each. To toggle on/off each subgroup; navigate to the subgroup - select bank - FUNC TRUNK - TRUNK (to select sub group) - FUNC 1 to toggle on/off.

Good luck.
