Let me first start by saying sorry if the following questions have been asked but I can't seem to find the answers. I Bought a 164 yesterday along with the cable and then signed up for a premium membership with rr. I downloaded a trial version of win97 and seem to be following all the directions but nothing ever seems to transfer to the scanner from the computer. The lights on the cable are flashing making me think everything is working fine. This morning I decided to punch in the frequencies manually and seemed to get it working but I am getting 4 beeps after every transmission which leeds me to think I am not in a trunk mode althought the T is flashing at the top. Please help.

From reading this, I'm going to take a WAG and assume you are using a USB-serial cable. Did you load the drivers BEFORE attaching the USB device and validate that the drivers allocated a valid port? These are very important steps to take. Once these are done, then you must change Win97 to point to that port. For example, if the device driver allocated COM5, and it's not being used by anything else, then Win97 must also point to COM5.

Be careful - some USB drivers stay resident even when their device is not attached. That can 'tie up' a port you otherwise thought was available. On XP (which is what I use at work), click on 'Control Panel', then 'System', 'Hardware' and 'Device Manager'. Someone can jump in here with the Vista version (in fact that should be added to the wiki...) 73 Mike

I have also found on my windows laptop as well as virtualbox on linux that the port moves sometimes I boot depending on what else is plugged in including my jump drives and usb gps unit.

*anything* usb *can* change the port assignment.
